EVERYTHING TEXAS #7 IN THE SERIES by Carl Winters/Historic Gruene TX/Oldest Dance Hall In Texas

#7 in the  Series EVERYTHING TEXAS - Historic Gruene  Texas -  Sometimes you can even see restored auto's - the old timers come to show off. This is a restored 1942 Cheverolet Truck

Gruene Mansion Inn Bed & Breakfast                      Oldest Dance Hall in TX

Arriving in Texas in the mid 1840's German farmers became the first settlers in this area known as Guene,TX. A German immigrant, Ernst Gruene and hs bride had reached New Braunfels in 1845. Ernst and his two sons purchased land just down river; this is where they built heir home and settled. They planted cotton which became the number one cash crop and as the business grew soon brought other families to settle in Gruene.

Gruene built houses in varios styles. The first mercantile store was built in 1878 and  later a cotton gin which was powered by the Guadalupe River. Later on construction of a dance hall and saloon was added; still known today and Gruene Hall. Gruene Hall has no A/C so come comfortable on summer nights to listen to some good old Texas music. This old dance hall is a must see.

Here are various pictures taken at Gruene:

This is the Gruene Antique Company. This is a magnificant old building. If you enjoy history and antiques you will enjoy this building. Above is the side view; looks like it may need some TLC.

TEXAS STATE FISH - GUADALUPE BASS - EVERYTHING TEXAS #6 IN THE SERIES By Carl Winters

This big guy is our Texas State Fish - Guadalupe Bass. Since I have seen people putting their fishing boats in here at Canyon Lake, TX it inspired me to make this my #6 in the series EVERYTHING TEXAS. Even though it is only February 24th we are having spring type weather and 80 degrees. Bluebonnets are already beginning to pop up so I would imagine we will have an early spring.

Much of this information I will provide will help if you are new to Texas regarding fishing information -  the Do's and Dont's  of fishing in Texas.

Guadalupe bass - Texas state fish

The male Guadalupe bass builds a gravel nest in shallow water and spawns there. Once the female lays her eggs (up to 10,000), he chases her away and guards the nest throughout the incubation period. The Guadalupe bass is found only in Texas, native to fast moving streams in the central Hill Country (including the headwaters of the San Antonio, Guadalupe, and Colorado Rivers).

A small but powerful fish, the Guadalupe is not a true bass, but a member of the sunfish family (also true for other "Black bass" including Largemouth, Smallmouth, and Spotted bass). The typical adult is around 12 inches long and 1 pound in weight.

Here is a picture of a Red my son caught at Port Aransas, TX last year

    www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fish

CANYON LAKE Water clear; 60 degrees; 0.01' high. Black bass are fair suspending jerkbaits (Bombers, Rogues, etc) in 12 - 20 feet, and on black/chartreuse hair jigs and Texas rigged grape Scoundrel worms on shaky jigheads along break lines and ledges. Striped bass are fair to good trolling ¼oz. white Curb's striper jigs and vertically jigging Pirk Minnows and Spoiler Shads. White bass are fair jigging Pirk Minnows and ¼oz. Blade Baits along the main river channel at mid lake in 40 feet. Smallmouth bass are very good on JDC smoke/red flake tubes, tomato red curl tail grubs, and tomato red drop shot worms over rock piles in 12 - 25 feet. Crappie are fair on minnows and crappie jigs upriver. Channel catfish are slow. Yellow and blue catfish are slow.

    Fishing Knots

How to tie a Paloar Knot

Palomar Knot- My favorite knot. I use only this knot for all applications. The Palomar Knot is another very simple knot for terminal tackle. It is regarded by the International Game Fish Association consistently as the strongest knot known. It's great virtue is that it can safely be tied at night with a minimum of practice.

    Directions:
Double about 6 inches of line, and pass through the eye. Tie a simple Overhand Knot in the doubled line, letting the hook hang loose. Avoid twisting the lines. Pull the end of loop down, passing it completely over the hook. Pull both ends of the line to draw up the knot.

    ____________________________________________________________

Hangman's Knot-There are at least 6 variations of the Hangman's Knot,  all of them excellent for terminal tackle, swivels and hooks. The "standard" Hangman's Knot holds only five turns when tied in monofilament line. If tied in rope, and used for its stated purpose, it takes eight turns.

    Directions:

Pass a 8 inch loop of line through the eye.

Bring the end back on itself, passing it under the doubled part.

Make five loops over the doubled part.

The formed knot is worked into shape.

The knot is sent down the line, against the eye of the hook or swivel.

    _________________________________________________________

Float Stop-The float fisherman uses a running float for casting and general handiness, and stops the float from running up the line by using the Float Stop. It has the advantage that the stops moves readily over the rod guides, but grips the monofilament line so tightly that it will not slide over the line

    Directions:
It should be made with about 6 inches of line, usually the same diameter as the line itself.

Take 2 turns (3 if necessary) around the main line at the chosen point.

Bring both ends around to form a Surgeon's Knot (see above).

Tighten into shape bringing the coils close together.

The dam was completed in 1964 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer for flood control and water supply and is now managed by the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority.

I worked with a construction company while in high school on Canyon Dam.

The lake offers a variety of water sports- fishing, water skiing, power boats, sailboats, camping, swim beaches, parks for picnic's. Ft.Sam Houston has a private facility for military familes. This lake is utilized year round for public recreation. Guadalupe River close by for rafting.

EVERYTHING TEXAS by Carl Winters-#5 IN THE SERIES-PECAN TREE & NUT

PECAN - THE STATE NUT OF TEXAS - This is #5 in EVERYTHING TEXAS

The pecan is the Texas state tree, being native to about 150 counties and capable of growing and producing in all Texas counties. The mature pecan tree is usually 70-100 feet in height, but can grow as tall as 150 ft. Some trees can be as old as 130-150 years.   We are all familiar with the sweet ediable nuts, deep brown in color, that we have all been able to enjoy.

Pecans are native to river and creek bottoms, the soils of which are deep, fertile and well drained. We see many pecan trees in New Braunfels and Seguin, Texas. When in season you see people picking up pecans that have fallen from the beautiful tree.

We have all enjoyed pecans in our desserts: Pecan Pie, Pecan Candy, Pecan Cake, Chipped Pecans in our salad. I am sure there are many ways to eat pecans.

YOUR FAVORITE RECIPE IS ACCEPTED IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE & BE SURE TO GIVE US ANY PHOTO'S THAT YOU MAY HAVE OF YOUR FAVORITE PECAN RECIPE..........

$200 Million Bond To Go Before Comal ISD Voters

    POSTED: 8:35 pm CST February 20, 2008

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas -- Voters in the Comal Independent School District will be asked to pass a bond package totalling more than $200 million that would affect six schools and create three others.

The school board approved the bond package during a Wednesday evening meeting. The plan would pay for three new elementary schools along with expansions to four middle schools as well as Canyon and Smithson Valley high schools.

Eight million of the nearly $206 million bond would be spent on upgrading technology in schools, according to the school board.

The kicker? District officials claim the bond would be paid for without raising taxes, saying the area's growth of more than five percent a year would help to pay for the bond.

    Elections Scheduled for May 10th.

EVERYTHING TEXAS by Carl Winters, #3 in the Series, The State Bird, Mockingbird

The Mockingbird, Texas State Bird, #3 in  Everything Texas

The Texas State Bird is the Mockingbird.

Texas Redbud Tree in bloom at the end of Feb. 2008 - The Mockingbird's love the Redbud Tree

If you haved always lived in Texas you know the Mockingbird by his song. The Mockingbird at times will swoop down and peck at your or your dog. The mockingbird is very protective of his nest and environment.

How to recognize the Mockingbird; The mimus polyglottos, as the mockingbird is known scientifically. The bird is about ten inches in length, including its relatively long tail. It has a light gray coat and a whitish underside. Its wings and tail are darker gray with white patches

Here is an interesting note from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Website: \"Mockingbirds are one of the most commonly noticed birds in the state. They are either applauded for their audaciousness or cursed for their persistence in nocturnal singing or in the defense of their territory. Insects, fruit, crustaceans and small vertebrates make up the mockingbird's diet. The fact that they enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables hasn't exactly made them gardeners' friends either, although they do eat lots of insects. "

If you are new to Texas I'm sure you will soon be introduced to the Mockingbird.

    Texas State Flower

    Bluebonnet (Lupinus)

The Texas state flower is named for its color and it is said , the resemblance of its petal to a woman's sunbonnet. It blooms in the early spring and can be readily found along highways and fields throughout central and south Texas.

It was adopted as the official state flower by the Texas Legislature in 1901.

Fall is the time to plant bluebonnets and other wildflowers in Texas. It is said it is best to cast the seed and rake into the soil. This seed will lie until enough moisture and cool temperatures stimulate and germinate the seed. The seeds need full sun and well-drained soil.

You can expect to see bluebonnets begin to shoot up sometime in March.

Hope you will look for and enjoy seeing the Texas Bluebonnet and other wildflowers this spring.

EVERYTHING TEXAS by Carl Winters #1 in the Series-Texas Flag (Lone Star Flag)

Here is some information regarding our Texas Flag and history of the flag. For additional information you can follow the link.

This is #1 in a series of information about our Great State of Texas.

     http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/ref/abouttx/flagdes.html

    Texas state flag

The Texas state flag is the 1839 national flag of the Republic of Texas. The state flag is a rectangle that has a width to length ratio of two to three. It contains one blue vertical stripe that has a width equal to one-third the length of the flag, and two equal horizontal stripes, with the upper stripe white, the lower stripe red, and each having a length equal to two-thirds the length of the flag. The flag has one white, regular five-pointed star. The five-pointed star is located in the center of the blue stripe, oriented so that one point faces upward, and sized so that the diameter of a circle passing through the five points of the star is equal to three-fourths the width of the blue stripe. The red and blue of the state flag are the same colors used in the United States flag. The red, white, and blue of the state flag represent, respectively, bravery, purity and loyalty.

www.TheStoryofTexas.com Jennifer Wright in Dripping Springs, TX sent this link. Thanks Jennifer for sharing.

State Pledge (additional information can be found below according to The Handbook of Texas Online)

Pledge of allegiance to the state flag

The pledge of allegiance to the Texas state flag is
"Honor the Texas flag; I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one state under God, one and indivisible."

According to The Handbook of Texas Online, "In 1933 the legislature passed a law establishing rules for the proper display of the flag and providing for a pledge to the flag: "Honor the Texas Flag of 1836; I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one and indivisible." The pledge erroneously referred to the 1836 national flag, known as David G. Burnet's flag, instead of the Lone Star Flag. Senator Searcy Bracewell introduced a bill to correct this error in 1951, but the legislature did not delete the words "of 1836" until 1965."

The pledge was again amended by House Bill 1034 during the 80th Legislature with the addition of "one state under God." The revised wording became effective on June 15, 2007.

According to The Handbook of Texas Online, "The Lone Star Flag was adopted by the Texas Congress in 1839...Senator William H. Wharton introduced a bill on December 28, 1838, containing the flag's design, and the bill was referred to a committee consisting of Senator Oliver Jones and two unnamed senators. This committee reported a substitute bill embodying the flag design introduced by Wharton, and the substitute bill was passed by the Congress on January 21, 1839 and approved by President Mirabeau B. Lamar on January 25, 1839."

    WOW-WOW-SPURS WON AGAIN!

San Antonio Spurs game just ended and they beat the Cavaliers on their last game of the Rodeo Road Trip. They won by 112-105 - What a game. If you missed it you missed a good one. They did a really good job without Tony Parker on this road trip.
