This big guy is our Texas State Fish - Guadalupe Bass. Since I have seen people putting their fishing boats in here at Canyon Lake, TX it inspired me to make this my #6 in the series EVERYTHING TEXAS. Even though it is only February 24th we are having spring type weather and 80 degrees. Bluebonnets are already beginning to pop up so I would imagine we will have an early spring.
Much of this information I will provide will help if you are new to Texas regarding fishing information - the Do's and Dont's of fishing in Texas.

The male Guadalupe bass builds a gravel nest in shallow water and spawns there. Once the female lays her eggs (up to 10,000), he chases her away and guards the nest throughout the incubation period. The Guadalupe bass is found only in Texas, native to fast moving streams in the central Hill Country (including the headwaters of the San Antonio, Guadalupe, and Colorado Rivers).
A small but powerful fish, the Guadalupe is not a true bass, but a member of the sunfish family (also true for other "Black bass" including Largemouth, Smallmouth, and Spotted bass). The typical adult is around 12 inches long and 1 pound in weight.

How to tie a Paloar Knot
Palomar Knot- My favorite knot. I use only this knot for all applications. The Palomar Knot is another very simple knot for terminal tackle. It is regarded by the International Game Fish Association consistently as the strongest knot known. It's great virtue is that it can safely be tied at night with a minimum of practice. |
|
Directions:
Double about 6 inches of line, and pass through the eye. Tie a simple Overhand Knot in the doubled line, letting the hook hang loose. Avoid twisting the lines. Pull the end of loop down, passing it completely over the hook. Pull both ends of the line to draw up the knot.
____________________________________________________________
Hangman's Knot-There are at least 6 variations of the Hangman's Knot, all of them excellent for terminal tackle, swivels and hooks. The "standard" Hangman's Knot holds only five turns when tied in monofilament line. If tied in rope, and used for its stated purpose, it takes eight turns.
Directions:

Pass a 8 inch loop of line through the eye.

Bring the end back on itself, passing it under the doubled part.

Make five loops over the doubled part.

The formed knot is worked into shape.

The knot is sent down the line, against the eye of the hook or swivel.

_________________________________________________________
Float Stop-The float fisherman uses a running float for casting and general handiness, and stops the float from running up the line by using the Float Stop. It has the advantage that the stops moves readily over the rod guides, but grips the monofilament line so tightly that it will not slide over the line
Directions:
It should be made with about 6 inches of line, usually the same diameter as the line itself.

Take 2 turns (3 if necessary) around the main line at the chosen point.

Bring both ends around to form a Surgeon's Knot (see above).

Tighten into shape bringing the coils close together.

Canyon Lake, Texas is where I live - Between San Antonio and Austin, Texas. - Approximately 12 miles from New Braunfels, Texas and Bulvere, Texas. A great place to live, fish, buy a home and raise a family. Come on over for fun and relaxation and stay awhile. This is an aerial view of Canyon Lake and Dam on the Guadalupe River in Comal County, TX. The dam was completed in 1964 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer for flood control and water supply and is now managed by the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority. I worked with a construction company while in high school on Canyon Dam.

- Texas has become a top fishing destinations for tourists both because of the excellent freshwater reservoirs and streams filled with largemouth bass, smallmouth bass and catfish and because of the superb red drum and spotted seatrout fishery along the coast. Indeed as the Texas population grows, the interest in fishing has grown as well.
